Reptile Express is having a sale (ya'll know how much I like sales) on shipments from the USA to CANADA!!!!!!!!!!! See this Link >>> Non CITES Import/Export (http://reptileexpress.com/noncites/)
Who Wants to pool an order together n save some money? Come on Canadians? Whose got the Garter bug?

Awesome! Funny. I paint Warhammer models (anybody?), and the company was founded on the other side of the pond as the saying goes. There are certain models in the hobby that can only be ordered from the England branch of the company, so the hobby shop I buy my models from places a big group order twice a year to split costs. I was thinking of similar tactics for some UK breeders when they prove out what they're working on. Raise the battle cry to all the Iowa forum members.

I'm down! Judy (dieselbaby) was planning an import with them this summer. I'm not sure if she'll want to just join in because she wanted to play it safe and handle things on the money end herself, but she was open to having other people join in on her purchase (with Scott). I'll e-mail her this thread. The more people, the more we can save!

There was also another group buy on reptiles Canada with Scott as well.

I had been emailing Scott about shipments to Canada and he said he was going to get me in contact with a groupe of other but it never happened... I don't blame him for loosing track of emails n people he is talking to, I know I would if I had that many snakes n babies everywhere! Either way I got an email from reptile express saying there was a sale... Couldn't help myself! lol

this sounds amazing but I'm broke for the next 4-5 months, after that I'm going to have some serious cash to splurge on getting a variety of garters and if garters can be shipped cheap over the border without hastle? that would rock

Well it sounds like it will be easier then it used to be, as well (looking at the link) this sale will be on again in august Phil.

Can everyone give me a rough estimate of how many snakes they would be getting?

Light of Dae
05-23-2012, 07:05 AM
I alone would want up to eight little ones.
1.1 anery plains
1.1 axan plains
0.1 red showing red plains
1.0 red plains
1.1 erythristic extreme red easterns

That is my wish list. I figure go big or go home?

I'm going to be so broke...

Steve will be impressed. He'd be more impressed if you added a couple of bog standard, out of the box, beautiful radix to your order.
And assuming Scott's Lake Cuitzeo Gaters produce I'd recommend that you add at least one of them to your order.

Go on, you know you want to. :)

Scott gave me a heads up about this thread. Im willing to go in with someone from this forum if they want to handle things, I havent had much luck getting people added to my order. I just didnt want to join someone elses order on another forum whom i had not even a conversation with. If you can get it done cheaper for me im in for my two blue pugets, or if you want to join my order either way im game. I know now i cant do it on my own, my vehicle broke down and i had to buy another pick up that depleted my saving so if i can save a couple hundred bucks by getting in with your shipment and not miss out on my two blue pugets im game.. I have had previous dealings thru nick with reptile express and believe they can get the job done.

sorry i not been around much, if it werent for bad luck i would have none at all this yr lol i swear..

August - Sept around that time is only when I'd be ready. I am NO clue how much shipping will cost across border. Rushing and doing it in the next week I'd only have like 50-100$ which likely won't get me anything :( Come August - Sept I should have like 400-700$ easily so it might be better for me to wait, then again by that time there might be no deals and no one to pool in with. All I know is this is a hobby first and foremost but in the next 2-3 years I would like to have a small business with some garters in Canada.

thamneil
05-23-2012, 04:07 PM
Oh believe me Steve... you will get your photos! Due to your very strong influence on me, im thinking of adding a pair of anery radix to the list. Im having such a tough time making up my mind!

kimbosaur
05-23-2012, 04:16 PM
If I join in, I'd only be getting a pair. I think I'd go for a red radix and an anery radix. Steve, it seems you have influenced the small Canadian population of this site...

I really hope I can participate but it's a matter of what the final costs will be and the timing of everythibng. I'm short on cash because I'm completing a full-time (unpaid) practicum this month.

Scott I know you just got a bunch of snakes from the uk, but would you want any from Scott f?

Light of Dae
05-25-2012, 06:34 AM
Ok so here I'm going to post a bit a bout the costs so we can all figure this out. I have been in contact with Scott F and he has been of great help in getting me these quotes n information.

Here's the breakdown on the fees:

1) First shipment is $250, anythereafter are $50 each, if 10 people go in it's 9 x $50 PLUS $250 divided by the ten shipments which = $70 per person

2) 5% declaration value fee (this is 5% of the value of whatever you order).

3) The shipping fee from me to Reptile express divided by the number of customers

4) The shipping from Reptile Express to you is $89. This is for a 9 x 9 x 9 box that will accomodate your snakes only in the shipment.

Basically I will send a large box full of snakes to Reptile Express. Each snake will have a number correlating to the person who ordered that snake to make it easy to id who gets what. Reptile express will then ship out the snakes to you from their Canada office.

Hope this clarifies the charges.

Thanks,

Scott

PS I was told that if we got ten customers the rate would drop to $30 per individual after the first one for $250 on the charges listed under #1
****

Ok so this is my quote for shipping them to me after they cross the border. I told him I'd want eight snakes.
*****
Here's the email for your shipping cost from Reptile express to you:

Hi Scott,

We do service this request. It would be available for pickup on day of delivery at the FedEx hub by 9am. Photo ID will be required to pickup the package.

Here is your rate for Michelle:

Shipping Box: 9x9x9"
Reptile Express Fee (ON to AB): $89

Total: $89

So basically how this will happen with multiple shipments is that you will ship multiple boxes to our Buffalo location. When you ship multiple packages overnight, you do receive the consolidated discount and don't get charged a whole new rate per box. We will then ship those animals in those same boxes to the final Canadian destination.
On top of all the containers/bags you'll need to put a label identifying the common and scientific name of the animals as well as sex/quantity (such as 1.2 etc).

Because non of your Canadian customers info is going to be on the invoice or as "ship to" address, you'll need to let us know in advance which animals are going to whom.
We will create a file on that. With a pen in the corner of the labels on the containers write the number "1" for all animals going to customer so and so, the number "2" for another customer. Simply email us which customers belong to which numbers.

In our files we will write down which customer #1's belong to and #2's and so on.

Hope I didn't make it confusing. Please let me know if you need clarification.

Thanks,
-Sam Fard

Michelle, just a heads-up but please learn the Alberta regulations before you get yourself and possibly others in legal trouble.
Of the list you posted below the only ones you could legally bring into Alberta are the 1.1 erythristic extreme red easterns.

It's not meant to sound harsh, just letting you know before you get too excited. I went through the same disappointment 5-6 years ago and went to the length of several in-person meetings with Fish & Wildlife (along with many emails & phone calls) just to be sure on how F&W interpret the regulations. I really wanted to bring some red radix up here, they're just gorgeous.

Scott is great to deal with, top notch snakes. I brought a couple of Santa Cruz garters up here from him a few years back and he went well above and beyond to help me out which I really appreciated. There are still a good number of Garters you can bring up from him though, just no Plains (radix), Wanderings (elegans), and no Red Sided (parietalis). Although we can have California Red-Sided (infernalis). The short version is we can legally keep but not import/export or sell/buy/trade any of our native Albertan garter species. Unlike some states in the US, our regs don't differentiate between wild and captive bred & morphs.

Hope that's helpful, though I know probably a bit of a bummer.

I alone would want up to eight little ones.
1.1 anery plains
1.1 axan plains
0.1 red showing red plains
1.0 red plains

Really? I can't bring up any plains? *Enter Jaw drop here* :'( No way! .... Radix aren't native in Ontario are they? ... there has to be a way around that...

Spankenstyne
05-29-2012, 07:03 PM
Believe me if there was a way you'd already have been able to buy all sorts of radix morphs in Alberta years ago ;)
The only way around it is to be a certified zoo or research facility and apply for the permits. This is in regards to Alberta.

Other provinces have their own regulations.

Light of Dae
05-29-2012, 07:08 PM
hmm so if they come from Ontario.....

Spankenstyne
05-29-2012, 07:14 PM
It makes no difference. The Alberta Wildlife Act prohibits anyone from bringing any radix into or out of Alberta without a permit period. It doesn't matter where they come from or if they're captive bred etc. It's not a US or Canada issue, it's an Alberta issue. We can only keep wild caught ones (for now, that's also being changed) but cannot buy/sell/trade or otherwise traffic in them as well. Basically we can only keep radix we find here as pets but not breed & sell them.

Here's a link to the regs that should work:

In case anyone has any doubts about importing non-license animals into Alberta (where the radix garters are listed in the Alberta Wildlife Act), you'll see here on the Alberta SRD page that a permit is required for import. You could try to get an import license, but I have been told by F&W in the past that they only approve them for Zoo's & research facilities.
Even then the best case scenario is you would only be allowed to keep them as pets & not sell etc. Posting this mainly for the sake of informing others when the subject comes up again as it does from time to time. Official links are always nice to see vs some anonymous random boob named "Spankenstyne" blathering on ;)

Just join!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely, it's a great opportunity for some of us Canadians to get some garters we usually don't have much access to. I sincerely hope it all goes smoothly for everyone involved, group orders can be complicated when issues arise at the best of times but the service being used for this is top notch and seems to be working together with Scott on this which is a huge plus.
If I wasn't expecting to be moving back to BC within the next few years (where you can't keep ANY Thamnophis, boo) I would also be all over this for lots of the many species that we *can* legally work with in Alberta. California Red Sided, Easterns (Flames etc), Oregon Red Spotted, Santa Cruz, Northwesterns and so on. As restrictive as it seems at times, there's a lot of cool garters we can still work with in Alberta & it's awesome to see folks getting more into Garters period.

Light of Dae
06-10-2012, 11:33 PM
Hey if when you move you have a few Thamnophis to re-home You know I'll drive down n give them a great home!! I have lots of tanks n lots of room n lots of loven's to give.

Never got around to calling them, I just changed up my list.

I am actually shocked at how cheap it is. There is a Reptile Express fee of $50 plus the shipping from Ontairo to where ever (Alberta for me is only $84!) It is really WAY more affordable then I thought it would be.

That's great, at least you were able to find substitutes. Looking forward to seeing what you got (and secretly hoping it includes infernalis) ;)

There are just way too many cool garters lol.

Chris, Scott doesnt have very much in terms of species and subspecies. Its mainly morphs at the moment. I was really hoping for something like infernalis or concinnus. I guess just subspecies in general as I am not too keen on morphs. I do believe I will be getting some similis though.

How much did the shipping from Scott to the US Reptile Express location end up costing? Or is that included in the $50? The cost from me to Reptile express will run $20 per person, that is seperate from the $50 (the $50 fee is what Reptile express charges). Thamneil I do have infernalis for sale, have babies from 4 unrelated litters.

We Albertans aren't allowed to bring in any T. s. parietalis. The only "Red-sided" garters we can bring into Alberta are T. s. infernalis. The mexicans & easterns are totally fine though.

I understand. The legalities can be pretty crazy especially in terms of morphs. We really need a better system in place in regards to this. I know people in my city who hide the fact that they keep hognose due to them being a high risk native species! Kind of sad to have to hide a captive bred animal.

1.0.0 is one male, 2.0.0 is two males, 0.1.0 is one female and 0.0.1 is one unknown/unsexed (sometimes used for eggs)

Light of Dae
07-11-2012, 09:35 PM
Stands for male . female n if you see a third number it is unknown

1.0.0 = one male
0.1.0 = one female
0.0.1 = one sex unknown(more then likely a baby)

Rober10169
07-11-2012, 09:59 PM
ok. so a 1.2 means only 3 babies in total, 1 male and 2 females. what happens then if a snake has 25, it would be something like 10.15?

kibakiba
07-11-2012, 10:17 PM
It doesn't just mean for babies it counts for adults too, if they're sexed and there are 10 males and 15 females, it would be 10.15.
If they aren't sexed, it would be 0.0.25.

Scott said I could get one, he says its up to me but he is uneasy about it not being fed as many times as he would like. I'm going to think on it for the night. ... But I'll probably still want one in the morning. lol

Is that because of the Manitoba laws as well? I didn't know Manitoba had Vagrans..

I still really want a melanistic though. I feel like im testing my parents patience though. I've used my dad's paypal so many times recently! If you do get the melanistic, I get first dibs to babies :p

Not sure what the reasoning was regarding the vagrans. He said that he want able to ship those in to Canada as a whole. I doubt there was a Canadian law that prevented this. Probably more of an internal concern seeing as all of the snakes are native to some part or another. Easterns dont appear to be covered by as many restrictions though.

it'll be AT LEAST two years for babies... If not three. Get one while you can.

I set up my own PayPal, Don't need a credit card, just online banking. It did take 3-5 to verify my account, then 6-8 days for the money to go through. But It was easier then sending a money order, which is something you could do too.

I think Scott may be misunderstanding the regulations and erring on the side of caution. We were hoping that the Canadian Regulations thread would help clear that up & to help folks down in the US as well as up here in Canada understand that our regulations work on the Provincial level & not Canada-wide.

CITES, WAPPRIITA, SARA all deal with stuff on a country-wide level and besides Butler's Garters I don't think applies to anything we see on the Thamnophis end.

Happy note. The rest are all happy, and active(except for one male Zacapu, he had a drink n went to bed..) The females seem WAY more active then the males.. The only thing I can account that too is I put them in my cold storage while I set the guys up. I With each snake when introducing them to the tank place them in the water after letting them drink.

Congrats on the new additions guys! Sorry Light of Dae that the little female eastern didn't make it. Do you know how long the garters where in the box? (from the time Scott sent them to the time you opened them up)

Hey everyone! Been a busy few days. So FedEx came to deliver the box and it was not received! Not sure what happened. We were all home and nobody heard a bell.

A few hours later, we went to pick it up when it became available at 6pm. At this point, the snakes had been boxed for close to 60 hours. I thought that at his point, the snakes were toast for sure. Well, luck was on my side. I opened the box to be greated by a beautiful group.

2.1 similis
1.1 scotti
1.1 sirtalis

I'm sure the little group will keep me busy. Not to mention a litter of 6 marcianus born this week.

Could they not have been able to find your place? Some drivers give up after driving around the block couple times. Or maybe it is company policy to not 'waste time' when an adress cannot be located.
I've had that twice with fedex when I lived in town. One time I was waiting by the window, watching, few hour later they call me and say they tried to deliver it but no one was home! I was mad. Liars.

Oh and Neil...
WE NEED PICTURES!

Well I still got 2.1 Eastern Flame Erythristic het Melanistic/Snow, So we can still watch them grow up n color up! Along with the rest of them...
2.3 Zacapu
0.1 Santa Cruz
0.1 Melanistic Eastern (jet black, no white(yet)!! Looks like velvet already!)
0.1 Chocolate Eastern (Looks really nice, I was wondering what it would look like cause Scott didn't have any pictures of one)
did you say you had worms on one?

Pretty sure they found my place. They printed a notice and left it on my door. You know pictures will come. Everybody is settling in well. The easterns and similis both had a nightcrawler snack right out of the deli cups. The scotti were more reluctant but they were in shed. Nobody wanted anything to do with pinkies but they went ham for the worms!

About BUSHSNAKEs comment on worms, one of my similis has a decent sized bump on his side. Could this be parasitic? I'm not too worried, just curious.

So all my little ones are doing good! The Flame/ery easterns ate(female is a piggy!! right stuffed now), the Chocolate Eastern ate (like a pig), The melanistic Eastern ate, The Santa cruz almost stole from one eastern flame/ery, but didn't eat, The Zacapu.. they looked at the food and or completely ignored it n slept lol That is ok, the small easterns need some time to catch up in size :)

I have the girls in one tank n the boy in another... well the lone santa cruz girl will hang out with the boys for 6months.

Hey how are everyones new additions doing? Have you guys notice any differences between NA gerters and the Central American garters? (besides size) I noticed that my scotti female is much more timid and secretive than my North American garters.

All mine are doing great n eating well. The Mexican garters are got are very lazy n laid back compared to the rest. They curl up in a tight ball n I can easily pick them up as a ball, it's like they try to ignore me with their heads tucked in the center lol

Here I had picked up two female Zacapu and placed them beside the food hoping the smell would make them uncurl n eat... No luck, Chocolate eastern on the other hand was happy to eat what they did not.

The chocolate is very friendly and inquisitive. The Flame/ery... played dead when she saw me lol Saw her eyes look at me, but she wouldn't move.

I love this tiny little Melanistic girl however she is very skiddish and hard to spot in the tank lol Velvet
6210

Blonde Zacapu in a ball peeking at me from on top a 'grass mat' that is hung up to create climbing n hides.
6211

Two male Zacapu NOT in BALL form lol Love the difference in color, one is blue looking the other is neon green.

Hey when you pick up the melanistic do their scales feel different to the touch than other garter morphs? It does to me.
