Figured I needed a new thread since the old one was titled 'Miss Marley'....

Marley's been hiding since he got put in the 40 gallon Bachelor Pad the other night, probably still settling in. Still working on making more plants and waiting for some hanging ones to arrive since I split up the decorations for the time being but he's been swimming and still not wanting to eat since we're still waiting on a shed he just came out of blue eyes, but I'm not horribly worried as its only been a

And the new little guy just arrived today and he is so stinking cute and bug-eyed and he's working on getting settled in into his new home, and I'm still trying to decide what to name him, I have some names picked out but can't make up my mind on which one to go with.

Dovah
Paarthy
or Sully

I'll be getting new pictures of everyone soon once I finish off the chores and errands that I need to finish off and let him settle in before I offer him some worm chunks tonight.

Alright, here's a couple of pictures of the new boy, he's really jumpy right now.

Look carefully and you can see a little guy anywhere

And his humble abode for a little while, at least until he's a little bit bigger most definitely. He's certainly smaller than when Marley came around

And ignore the Windex, its for the desk.

And right now, the shelf is missing some import parts. A couple of the slides that keep the shelves from falling can't be found to I have to get some, so for the moment Noname is on the desk while the Bachelor Pad is on the floor at the moment.

Not the greatest of Marley right now, but he's still settling into new house and he actually came out of hiding.

Well good news all around.

Marley finally shed and ate a couple of worms. I think he's still getting use to it as he's only been in one of the plants most of the day and is only doing a little bit of moving around.

The new boy however has been everywhere in his tank, hides, substrate. He even at some worm chunks tonight. He took them from the lid as I held him and took a couple of more from the hemostats.

And as for the name, I'll be going with Sully. It was the name that came to me when I unpacked him this morning.

Beautiful little guy! We have an adorable little boy at our pool named Sully...short for Sullivan. I really like that name. Of course...I probably won't mention to his mother that I know I snake named Sully....ha ha! I, of course, would be flattered to have a snake named after me...but you know non-snake people....

I might do that sometime. Name one of my snakes Eastern Girl. It'd be kind of fitting for most of the snakes I catch around here.

Feel free to name any of your snakes Didymus. Just remember, it's Greek for "Twin".

I don't own the trademark on 20X6, though. You'd have to talk to The Brothers Chap about that.

Well came home tonight and fed the boys. Marley took a worm and Sully ate a couple of more chunks. And when I came home he found himself a nice hiding perch in the plant already.

And should I mist his tank any. He does have a shallow water dish that has a built in ramp so that he can get out and I do have a spray bottle but I can't seem to get it to work at the moment but that shouldn't be a problem to fix and I have others. I'm just worried with it getting up to the 90s already out here I'm even thinking of making a moist hide for him to help keep him cool.

And of course right afterwards he left a nice little pile of poo in my hand, so it looks like everything is working fine on him.

And of course the redhead Marley himself, still great at posing and staying still for pictures. He can have a camera right in his face without a problem.

Yeah, I think Marley knows that he's a handsome boy, and a friendly personality to boot. I love that guy so much.

And it must be something about albinos and plants. Sully loves to perch in his plant quite a bit and chill out there while I mist it, which he seems to love. He's starting to let me hold him a bit but he's still pretty skittish, he won't be perching on any laptops anytime soon just yet.

Perhaps... *shifty eyes*... Its' not like I have 100+ hours put into that game, but who's counting after the first 40...

But the next guy I get, he's gonna be called 'Dovah or Paarthy' no matter what, unless he looks like another name. But thats going to have to wait until after the vacation.

Sully and Marley are enough right now since I have to board them and my grumpy Leo for a week and a week and a half at the reptile store which is a little over a month away and still thinking about it makes me a nervous Reptile Momma. Curse having Herpetophobic friends who won't toss a couple of worms to a snake and check on water.

Though I think Snake Guy there is going to get a kick out of it, he fell in love with Marley, since he was surprised he wasn't more upset about being sexed.

But good news this morning, I woke up to a nice fresh shed from Little Sully Didn't even know he was about to shed, he's been eating wonderfully everyday about half to two thirds of a worms. Got to learn how to notice incoming sheds on albinos.

And Marley's being sulky somewhat, he's eating just fine but has spent most of his time hiding or basking under the ramp, probably still not use to his new house which is considerately bigger than what he had. He went from a 10 gal to a 40 gal. So I think he'll be better with some more cover and once I get the timer working again for his light.

It really does seem to be a thing with albinos and trees...my albinos love to get up in their trees. Interestingly...they haven't been doing it much lately...I used to put their red lamp on at night and turn it off during the day...since they seem to be noctural. I recently started putting it on during the day and turning it off at night...to see if it would encourage them to come out more during the day. It hasn't worked...they never come out during the day. I guess I will start putting it on at night again...so that maybe they will come out and bask under it again.

Sully is lovely! He looks a lot like Mr. Joe Peachbottom. And I just love Marley...he's so gorgeous. I love how he hams it up in photos! You could definitely try misting. I mist at least once a day in all of my tanks. Especially if it is so warm there. Just watch that the substrate doesn't get damp...stick to misting plants...and make sure the humidity doesn't get too high. I'd say you probably don't want it over 70%. I think it is really difficult to tell when albinos are going to shed. I basically just watch for mine to start hiding a lot more than usual. I really haven't been very good at pinning down definite signs of an impending shed. I think that Hermes face starts to look crackly and his lips look a little inflammed almost as if he has a minor lip infection...which I have seen in other albinos before a shed. It's easier with my snow...Possum's skin gets folds in it before he sheds. But they both still surprise me most of the time.

Okay, everyone had a bit of a pool day this afternoon mostly because it was reading 90 in the house today while its 86 degrees outside to cool everyone off a bit. Right now in Kansas the weather keeps going up and down, like it normally does this time of year so its hard to justify turning on the air for a day.

Marley didn't do so bad for the first time in the tub and started swimming some slow circles around the tub, though I think the redhead drank some of the pool water, silly boy, not like he didn't just get his waterbowl cleaned out after pooping in it or anything
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i234/InsanePirateDragon/IMG_01071.jpg

And afterwards, he wanted his chin rubbed for being a good boy
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i234/InsanePirateDragon/IMG_01101.jpg

Sully didn't go in the tub or sink but a little container and he didn't like it one bit though getting fed afterwards made up for it.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i234/InsanePirateDragon/IMG_01111.jpg

And I've been misting his plant and making sure he soaks so he doesn't get dried out in the heat. Once it gets darker the temp should drop considerately.

Gah, confound being so busy.

With Memorial Day and whatnot last week was just crazy, and little Miss Turtle I'm working on setting up for the moment. I will try to get pictures of everyone soon, Sully's looks like he's gotten so much bigger already, or that might just be me.

And to top it off, I might be having to go into the doc's to get one of the many toe issues I have. My family has bad toenails and one has decided to boycott walking at the moment so I've been having to limp around for the moment.

Just an update on everybody for the moment.

Miss Turtle is settling in fine and eating up all the nightcrawlers without a problem so I'm now going through them twice as fast, I might have to start buying them in bulk.

Both Marley and Sully are still eating really well. Silly Marley will only eat if his dish is in front of his rock hide so he can take his bounty inside now. But he is getting out more now and he's taken up hiding in the lip of the tank between the screen and plastic and absolutely freaking me out.

And Sully is eating out of my hand like a pro, though he still prefers his food dish which he's starting to catch onto feeding time as he'll wait by it.

And apparently he's missed the memo that he's an albino. He's out constantly during the day, mostly sitting at the top of his plants. He hasn't gotten the idea of climbing just yet but probably will eventually.

InsanePirateDragon
06-05-2012, 05:08 PM
So nothing new really, Sully shed again already and is starting to get excited when he see's the hemostats, so he know who brings the food.

And I think it turns out that all I believe after reading KS laws (confusing in its self) that I can only 5 of either Radix and Parietalis with a KS hunting license since they both are native species.

But reading more of it, I don't think I'll be able to own a Checkered with them being endangered here in KS. But the others are at least fair game.

So my phone is in the shop at the moment so I don't have pictures, hopefully I'll get shots of everybody before I send them off to their vacation while I go on mine.

But Some great news!

Marley is going out on his first classroom gig soon!

My mother is a preschool teacher and they have a week dedicated to reptiles and usually she would just want my old and calm gecko Commanda before she died as my mother trusted her to not run away or bite anyone compared to my Fry.

But Marley and Miss Lightning Flash the box turtle will be going in to teach the kids about the local reptiles. I'm really excited about this, I love teaching kids about reptiles since reptiles except the copperhead and cottonmouth always have people worried. I can and try to hook some little ones into Garters and with Marley's personality he should be able to hook them in and calm enough to not freak them out with their screaming and yelling. Marley is quite use to noise with the loud rock and metal that tends to blair in the house.

I would take Sully, but I don't think he's ready just yet, he's growing fast! (Measured after last shed earlier in the week at almost 9 inches) So he might get to visit in another year or so, we're still getting to know each other. He's calming down and is letting me handle him a lot more but we're a still work in progress.

Unfortunately, still don't have a camera, but first day of reptile visits went fairly decently.

Marley was a bit nervous being in the travel tub but he did calm down and a couple of the kids got brave enough to pet his back which he didn't mind one bit, and I brought a couple of past skins I've been saving for trips like these that I passed around while I told Marley's story while I showed him off.

But they seemed to enjoy Lightning the Box Turtle mostly because I brought a little pen for her so she could go on the ground and offered her some alfalfa to eat, though she was fed some worms that morning.

And Fry stayed in his carrier, but the kids took a peek, he was being a bit grumpy and doing some tail waving. He hates traveling and out of enclosures he is not to be trusted but the kids think he's still cool.

Tomorrow its going back again to show the other class, which from what I'm told is the much more rowdy class.

Thats really cool! I'm sure the kids are loving it. When my snake shed a couple weeks ago, I gave it to my grandma to show to her class of 2nd and 3rd graders. She said they all thought it was cool:cool:

InsanePirateDragon
06-12-2012, 12:24 AM
Yeah little kids have a better time with skins than live guys. Sully might do it in the fall, depending on how big he is then, I know that would get them excited, a lot of them probably haven't seen white snakes small enough for them.

Oh and anyone familiar with the Chicago area and what possible garters might be up there, I might try to actually do some herping around the lake, which I've never actually done before instead of the tried and true 'lets dig in the woods and see if I find anything'.

I know I missed out on the big reptile show there. I've been dying to go to a bigger show than the KC Reptile Expo. It was just so small and no garters in sight at any of the booths which made me kind of sad, and a couple of them did chuckle a bit when I mentioned I kept garters.

But at least the Reptile Store is happy to watch them, they've been getting a kick of the pictures I've been showing them, and Snake Guy there actually loves Garters.

And my critters will be taking up a nice sized corner of the boarding tanks now with Sully and Lightning added to the folds.

Well its amost a week until I leave next friday for vacation and the boys go on theres.

Marley's shed and is starting to use the top lip of the bachelor pad for his own personal track. So I made it a habit to check now. And of course.he shed after the classroom visits and back to his normal self.

Sully for the first time actually turned down food the other day which is a shocker for the little piggie, but I did notice that his eye wasn't as bright pink so he might be getting ready to shed.

Part of me wants to start housing them together since Sully is already nearing 10 inches already but I think that'll happen after I get back from vacation or if I should keep him quranteed another month or so. I might be needing it to a new leo girl to try and curb an agressive Fry and on the hunt for a couple of more garters that won't take my hand off.

I've had success with albino leos with normal leos since I use belly heat as my prefer method since my cat loves to knock over overhead lamps, she just broke Fry's once more.

And I just got my phone and camera back so pictures will be coming wensday.

The Parietalis boys, Fry, and Miss Turtle are all nice and comfy for their vacation at the store.

Of course I think I turned into a nervous parent sending their kids to camp. Everyone got their hides, food, food bowls.

And I presented them with a list of who likes being handled (most everyone) and who would try and take their hand off (a certain Leo) and when they eat and how they eat it, along with my phone number in case anything happens.

They are always curious about how my snake boys are doing, again garters still not popular here but I bet Sully will be getting a whole lot of attention at the store, I might come back with a lot of people asking questions about them hopefully.

I'm back in KS and everyone's back home where they should be and all still fat and happy and more than happy to see them.

The store had the boys and Ms Turtle all packed back up in their containers when I got back to the store. Everyone ate pretty good from what I was told and the Garter boys hung out in the trees of the enclosure and of course were good boys with Sully getting a lot of attention and that they settled down quickly.

Marley was more than happy to lay in my arms for a while I loved on him for a little bit before I put him back in the Bachelor Pad. And Sully was a little skittish but settled down when he realized who it was.

And Ms Turtle and Fry settled back into their own homes without much trouble though I think Fry was being sulky.

Of course the store made the observation that Fry was kind of fat... And he bit one of the workers when they were taking care of poop. Thats my Fry alright.

But so glad to have the gang back again.

Nice update. How will you be keeping your pets cool during the heatwave? I've heard on the news that Kansas had a record 110 degree weather

Yeah its pretty bad but at least the last couple of days gave been cool but its pretty much just keeping track of everything I've survived Kansas Summers so far, but it . But the thermostat is set at 75 so its still fairly cool without blowing the AC. And I mainly use belly heat so if the guys need heat they have it. And there's a few pool parties for snakes planned in the future and I have a back up place for everyone if the air conditioner should blow, which everyone should have if the worst would happen.

Its always good to have plans for if there's emergencies. Quick packing boxes in order to move everybody, Hot Hands for if you loose power in the winter and where the pet friendly storm shelters are. But hey its Kansas, we get the works so its pretty much instilled in everyone around these parts.

InsanePirateDragon

Well this drought and heat hasn't killed me off yet, but it did freak me out the other day, again, it doesn't hurt to be prepared for certain situations such as this.

I lost both power and water for a few hours, not sure what happened but it was in the afternoon when it was 100+ outside and it didn't take long for it to start getting hot and stuffy in the house so everyone went into their travel tubs with a few bags of ice that I had a friend go out and get for me, along with a couple gallons of water for everyone else.

Luckily the shade of the bed and the ice kept them at least in the 80s until I got power back in the evening.

Just catching up to this thread. I'm so glad to hear that the snakes were well cared for while you were on vacation. Well sorry I've haven't been around, my hand decided that it wanted to visit the land of Owieville and spend the last few weeks splinted up and useless which made trying to handle reptiles a little hard (particularly to a certain little albino who doesn't really sit still just yet)

But both Garter boys are doing fine, Sully's clocking in at over a foot now and is very eager for his food, but he will take it nicely from my fingers without complaint and now understands the concept of a food bowl and no longer hauls his worm and fish across the tank.

And Marley's a good ol' boy now, more than likely full grown now at a descent 25 inches with his most resent shed yesterday and went on his many trips to preschool with the kiddies, who love him. I just love my handsome boy.

And for picture spam

Wait... Is that BREAKFAST!!!

Okay so funny story yesterday...

I fed everyone in the morning like I always do before I go to work, and I believed that I had everyone all locked up and secure so no worries.

Then I get an interesting call while I was at work last night from my sister who was at the house.

Sis: Hey are you missing a snake
Me: Not that I know of... Why...
Sis: Well a little pink snake just came slithering up to me with a 'take me home' look on his face.
Me: Wait... What? You have Sully!

So somehow, I'm not exactly sure, but the little Houdini got during feeding time and had run of the house for a few hours. And at least he was smart enough to go up to someone without much trouble... Silly boy.

So I might be moving up his transfer to the Bachelor Pad a little sooner than I thought. I was going to wait until winter to put him with Marley but I might just go ahead and do it since the big tank apparently is more secure than the the 10 gallon.

And his humble abode for a little while, at least until he's a little bit bigger most definitely. He's certainly smaller than when Marley came around

A tip:

Put the water dish on the far cool end, away from the heat sources which should be on the other end. If you want to see them out more, try adding plastic plants to make the enclosure rather "jungle like" and add an overhead heat source. They'll often then come out up into the plants to bask under the overhead heat.

Some albinos prefer to come out after dark. They can't see red light so a red heat bulb will let you see them, but they'll think it's dark and come out. Works for kings and milks that hide all day, too.

Alright so its officially has been a week since Sully moved into the Bachelor Pad with Marley with no incidents. They either take up different hides (I made sure that there were plenty so that they could get away from each other) or they'll share the basking spot each in their own pile of snake. Sully's even shed since going in so thats a good sign.

Still going to keep them separate while eating though since Sully likes to go 'everywhere' with his share.

But all in all, I don't know what I was worried about in the first place, but I'm still watching them like hawks looking for signs of aggression from either of the boys.

Meanwhile RL just taken a turn with my grandmother just being diagnosed with cancer and we really don't trust my uncle to take care of her, me and my family will be talking more about it over thanksgiving of what to do.

But if push comes to shove I might have to relocate for a little while to Pittsburg KS for a few months at least. And the boys and Fry will probably at least come down with me and I wouldn't be able to get internet down there unless I hit up a Starbucks.

And I hate coffee.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. I hope that she can beat this. She is in loving hands, though, so that is good. Sully looks so big! Can I ask you the difference in size of Sully and the other bachelors? I am considering moving some younger snakes in with adult snakes...but I can't decide if it would be safe based on size difference. That is funny about Sully getting out and slithering right up to someone! If that happened here...you all would know it because you would be able to hear the screams of my family all across the country. Glad Sully didn't go MIA.

Thanks.

But yeah, Sully's grown a lot he's as long as the 10 gallon so I figured it wouldn't hurt to move him a bit earlier than I planned, I'll get some pictures of him and Marley tonight. Now Marley is still a bit bigger min you, but I do trust Marley not to get all 'grr' with Sully, still I always check on them every morning and whenever I pass reptile/bedroom.

Probably helped that I used the rule of Leos. Provide enough hides for everyone and space there shouldn't be fighting. Each snake pretty much has his house; Marley has his rock hut and Sully has his bamboo tube and the humid hide that I keep chasing him out of. Its not like he has a snake pool or anything... Silly Sully.

Marley gave the tube a try but he didn't exactly fit the tail end of his body in and it was quite comical to pull two feet of snake out like a magic trick. He wasn't stuck, just needed him the weekly body checks that I do and to hang out on my computer with me like we always do though he's gotten a bit big for his normal spot.

I've been super paranoid about mites since the hedgehog had them. It took forever to get rid of them.

Two different mites. No need to worry.
Hedgehog mites are probably sarcoptic, demodectic, psoroptes, and chorioptes.

Snake mites are Ophionyssus natricis.

Okay I got a pick of the boys while I was changing out bedding;

Marley still has a bit of bulk against Sully's awkward teen stage as I'm calling it.
