Please welcome our newest T.s.pickeringii (Puget Sound garter). His name is Twitch. He is very sweet and loves to be held. He is putting on weight nicely and is adjusting very well. That last pic is kind of blurry, but I wanted to show how beautiful blue/green his neck is.

Very nice. I see he even has a bit of red spotting. Concinnus' in SW WA also have that nice turquoise color on throat and neck underside. Sometimes they have lateral stripes that color too, like your puget. I suspect that is because the two subspecies were only recently (in geological time) separated from each other in WA.

Another great looking snake Kat. I'm truely envious of anyone who can go for a walk near home and find snakes like these.

That's weird. I don't see how one could miss them if you spend any time outside at all.

I see them every once in a while now, but when I was a kid I saw them all the time. I think the NW are taking over a lot of their habitats around here. I end up going to higher elevations and finding a lot more.

So Kat, you never find any like these? These are Dupont snakes. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Very blue! Is the red spotting common in your area?

I've not seen the blues. The ones I see vary quite a bit as you know. Twitch is the first I've seen with the red. The ones we see where we go are mostly like Cotton and Toothless, with little to no lateral stripping. Another area where we have been we've seen the green ones.

You're kidding, right? Northwesterns are more adaptable to disturbed or less than good habitat whereas pugets not so much. You're probably just seeing more northwesterns because the pugets have declined for some reason, which would allow the area to support more northwesterns (which were always there, sharing the habitat)

Patience. I'll be herping the area soon. If it isn't the weather delaying it, it's a broken arm.

Thats funny i lived in Port Orchard,Wa. back in 83 when i was working as an army recruiter in Bremerton. Had a den of Pugets in the back yard tree stump. Not real blue though.

Nope. The blue ones are at the south end of the sound where i'm staying. This one found right down the road: Puget Sound Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis pickeringi) DSC_0058 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ndomer73/1317752498/)

I lived on Kidd Ave in the late 80's and we spent most of our time at archery shoots and hiking the state parks which are so plentiful there. I love WA.

I woke up to see Twitch soaking in his water bowl with a partial shed around his belly. He had a tough time with this shed. I got him out and it took about 20 minutes with a warm damp cloth to get him taken care of. Got a little musked, but he looks amazing!!!

A lot of fun to watch.
Be careful of that drain lever area. I believe there is an overflow drain just under that round mounting plate.

Thanks! We took the cover off and turned it upsidedown a long time ago, plus they are never left alone in there. I get over protective when they are outside of the tank. :)

Bill is quite handy at fixing and revamping stuff. He has been an engineer since he was 6yrs old making a mechanized submarine that worked and didn't leak.
