Went to clean the water dish and realized I hadn't seen Maria yet today. Did a head count and no Maria. I have no idea when she got out or which direction she would have headed  :(. I put her tank on the ground on it's side with her water dish available and the heating pad under it. Hopefully she will show up soon, I think she is due to shed, plus it's almost food day.

Is there anything else I can do but watch and wait? I looked under the couch, fridge, oven, and bed. I looked behind the tvs and around the baseboard heaters. Our place is small.

Unfortunately I don't think there is much you can do, usually when a snake escapes they look for dark warm places. I hope you find her soon.

Ok, this may seem awful, but I put a frog in a container with very tiny holes all over it in the enclosure on the floor to try and entice her out. The container is one we saved from buying crickets. Hopefully this works. Sorry to anyone if this seems cruel to the frog. I guarantee the safety of the frog.

I'd happily use food to try to get an escaped snake back into the fold.

Unfortunately in our house, what the snakes call food the cat does too, so the bait would attract the cat... Not to mention that the cat would consider the escapee to be either food or a toy. I'm paranoid about another escape (we've only had one and found her). My plan if we have another escape is to spray fishy water around the likely hiding places, I have old nasal sprays that I clean out and use for misting and figure that using water that has had trout in it would fill the air with fishy smells.

Hope you find Maria soon.

Has anyone, ever, caught an escaped snake with a trap of any kind? I can't remember.

Just keep looking! She's gotta pop out eventually. Sounds like you've already got a good plan in action!

Thanks. I'm glad we don't have any other pets. I don't have to worry about her getting eaten by a cat or dog. I guess we'll just have to be patient. I just hope she sheds ok. As far as the trap goes, I don't think I would want to risk using all that tape, but it looks like a good theory.

Kat...try the warm towel pile trick. Take a bunch of towels and if you have a washer and dryer...put the towels in the dryer and then put them in a big heap on the floor...I have read that snakes will go to the warm pile to hide and burrow. I hope you find her soon! Fingers crossed for you!

We don't have a washer or dryer. That is a good idea though.

Set a desk lamp on the floor to create a warm spot, privide water and a hide nearby.
Check frequently.
i found micro nearly a month after s/he excaped, basking in light not far from the floor drain that had become 'home'.
Good luck!

I have her enclosure on the floor on it's side with a heat mat under it. Her water and hides are inside along with a frog to entice her. (No harm will come to the frog). I just miss her. She is a very sweet snake.

Thankfully you don't have to worry about other animals getting at her. Are there any escape routes she could use to get out other than the front door? Any holes or vents that she could squeeze through?

Could you make small pile of towels and somehow put the heat lamp over the towels...pointing at them to make them warm? Or maybe put the towels over the heat mat?

I've had a couple of escapees in the past and although I put traps down they never worked, the awol snakes did turn up eventually tho just keep an eye out for movement.

That sounds like a house fire waiting to happen.

No luck yet, but Bill made a tape free trap with some worms and dirt in it. We are going to make a couple more and put them around the house. We have the enclosure and one trap in separate places in the main living area, and we will put the other two in the bedrooms.

Check your shoes and boots, etc. We had an escapee that we didn't know about and the end result was tragic...

katach
05-02-2012, 06:26 PM
I did that yesterday. I went through all the shoes and boots and told the kiddo to make sure there isn't anything in his shoes before he puts them on. I remember you had a sad event with an escapee and shoes.

Well...I was kind of assuming that Kat would know to not put the lamp close to the towels or the towels right on the heat mat...let me be more clear...Kat, don't put the lamp on top of the towels and put something over the heat mat to buffer between the towels and the mat. You could put the pile of towels near the tank that is over the mat. I don't know...I'm just trying to offer suggestions that might help.

You mean I shouldn't burn down my apartment building??? :D

EasternGirl

Right...please don't throw a lamp in a pile of towels and wait for the snake, and then I'll feel horrible when the apartment goes up in flames. :D I can just see you now with Bill and the kids and the snakes...holding a pic of Maria and standing in a pile of ashes with a bunch of angry neighbors...the caption at the bottom of the pic will read.."At least I caught the escaped snake...". :D

Yes we found her. She is safe and back in her tank.
I took a few pics, but they were all blurry. I'll do another photo shoot tomorrow. I need to get a good photo studio set up for our snakes. I love to take pics of them, it's just difficult to get pics when you have to hold the camera in one hand and the snake in the other. :)

good news!

i remember when i was a kid, i lost my first large concinnus in the house. weeks later i heard the neighbors (behind our yard) dog going berzerk and went to investigate. i peeked over the fence and there was my snake, cornered by the dog, hissing and striking. i was so relieved.

That is great news! I lost a corn snake named Rusty back in '85. Of course, I didn't have internet then to ask for help and didn't know enough to set a trap. I never saw any sign of him, even after extensive renovations, not even a shed skin. I figure he must have found a way out. I still think about him, even after this long. I am very cautious with Bev, as she is so tiny, I would never want a repeat of that experience. With any pet diappearance, it's the wondering that is so hard. I'm glad Maria is back safe and sound.

One concinnus escapee i had last summer never turned up. She was quite large. Those usually turn up in the house within a few weeks. Hard to miss. No funny smells so she must have gotten out of the house. At least, I hope she did.
