Hi, I am new and trying to learn more about the species. I am considering a garter for my first snake. I have experience keeping beardies but have never had a snake. I have also been told Kenyan Sand Boas are easy but know nothing else about them. I have been fascinated with coloubrids in the wild for a while but have never thought about one as a pet until recently. If I get a snake I want it to be small. I am wondering which of the garter snake is the best species for the profile I am looking for. I have seen all the latin american morphs and there are so many choices it is overwhelming!
Thank You

Welcome.
May I suggest a T.radix (Plains Garter Snake)
Here is a link to the care sheet which is always a good read.

Welcome to the forum. A garter is a good choice of snake, and as you already know there's so much choice. Those latin American snakes aren't morphs though, they are distinct species or sub-species. One of the things I love about garters is that there is something that much variety between species, and then if morphs float your boat there's a lot of morphs of some species too.
As far as recommendations for a species of garter - radix are great snakes and seem to be easy to keep, they have good personalities and tend not to be too skittish.

Welcome to the forum family! You will love having a garter. Our family has 10. If you are looking for small, NW (T. ordinoides) are perfect! They are sweet and calm very easily! Where abouts do you live? Do you know what species you have in the wild around you, if any?

Welcome to the forum! Garters are wonderful snakes. You will love having one. Radixes and northwesterns are very friendly and calm...I of course, love my easterns, but I will admit, they can be quite skiddish.

I live outside of Montgomery Alabama...We have lots of coloubrids and venomous snakes in my yard because it is located on a pond and in the woods.....I mainly see copperheads, cottonmouth, rat and corn snakes and the occasional garter in the bushes....I think they are the Thamnophis sirtalis

I am going to wait till I get to move from where I currently live (roommates are terrified of snakes) I think I will get a radix though....it seems like it would be the best fit for me and I want a male.....Where is a good place to buy from....I have lots of bearded dragons and know the good from scary breeders but I don't know anything about the snake world.....I do not want to buy it from a superstore type place....I like family-type breeders

We have some great breeders on the forum. You might look in the classified section and contact them from there.
T.radix is a good choice. A very good choice. In my opinion the best choice. I could go on but I think you get the point.:D

thanks....I will definitely check the classifieds here prior to purchasing one....I don't really care how much the one I pick cost to a degree. I just want the one that I find the most attractive whether it be the cheapest or higher-grade...I will do some research and then look into purchasing one.....Right now all my disposable income has gone into dubia colony haha I have spent more on dragon food that myself x10
