Well, I'm not sure if my mom intended me to tell everyone, but I need to talk about it. Yesterday morning my little sister fed Flicker. And we where in a rush to get to school so I didn't bother to check if the cage was closed. When we got home that evening. We found that his cage was open and he was gone. After I stopped mourning, I started trying to make a snake trap. I put his cage on it's side and put the light over it all night. So far its a no go, and we're worrying that he got into the basement, we're worried that he'll get outside from there since there is a way out through the basement. But its so cold out there I'm not sure he'll go out. Meaning he may very well be stuck in the basement with no food or water... :(

Google bottle traps. They sometimes work. I found that leaving food out in a few rooms for a day with masking tape layed carefully sticky side up and around the food/over doorways worked best when I lost my king for a week. Only use masking tape though as anything with stronger can cause serious injury. When it comes to getting the tape off the snake just soak it in some luke warm water for a few minutes.
When I found my king he was an angry ball of snake. But a safe ball of snake.

Please do not use tape of any kind to try to trap the snake. Tape of any kind on a garter snake can cause serious injuries. We have had members lose snakes due to wounds from tape. Is there a way that you can leave some food and a water dish in the basement for the snake? Another trick to try is to warm some towels in the dryer and then leave them in a big pile for the snake...snakes will often go to the warm pile and burrow. Check the pile often.

sorry, I didn't realise that garters skin was that much more frail. I only mentioned it as its an accepted method with other species :(

No problem...we just always tell members to avoid tape around garters. They can get their tongues stuck to it and rip them off...rip off scales...it can cause pretty nasty wounds that they can't recover from. You didn't know...now you do. :)

that's fair enough. With kings and corns its only recommended to use masking(decorators) tape as its so weak and has very little in the way of adhesive properties.

I have actually seen it recommended in garter books that I have to use the tape method you described for catching escaped snakes. But after several discussions on here about the dangers of tape around garters...I would always advise against using any kind of tape in trying to catch a snake. I mean, after all, I have garter books that say to feed crickets to garters too! Lol... I trust this site more than I trust most of the books I have. The only book that I hold reliable is The Garter Snakes: Evolution and Ecology...but that's the bible. ;)

Micro came up out of the floor drains to bask and find heat- I just walked in onjer basking and picked her up before shehit cover. Set up a comfy corner and she may seek it out.
I hope you do find Flicke4.
