I am trying to vary my garters diet more, and wrote down a list of safe fish s/he can have. Mum offered to pick it up for me during her shopping trip and decided they were all too expensive and came back with two fresh fillets of pouting instead. I have looked around but can't find it mentioned on any of the safe or unsafe fish lists I have bookmarked, or any others I can find, does anybody know if it is safe to use? I think it should be as its a member of the cod family but want to be sure. I figure this is the best place to ask! If its not my folks will eat it, but obviously I am hoping it is since we seem to be able to get it cheap. :D

Isn't that french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy? Pretty tasty, but I wouldn't think good food for garter snakes.

Hi! Squishy, there is a list of safe species of feeder fish here - Garter Snake Forum - Garter Caresheet (http://www.thamnophis.com/index.php?page=caresheet)

Thanks hun, that is one list I checked and unless it has a different name I am unfamiliar with its not on either list. Think I might leave it in case and take a trip out for something different later in the week.
My local aquatics shop should have silversides so I will try those. :D

I'm not sure what pouting is...Chris or Greg may be able to tell you if it is safe...they may have heard of it.

Pouting is part of the Cod family so I suspect it is safe, but I'm no fish expert so I couldn't say for sure.
A bit of Thiaminase won't hurt your snake though, just make sure it isn't the only thing your feeding or supplement with B1

From what I've read, I haven't seen anything about thiaminase in these. My main concern would be contaminates in the water, such as mercury. When in doubt it's better to not risk it.
