I've been in contact with a local trout farm. Looks like I'll be able to get trout fry at a comfortable 1- 3" ... well any size really, will be aiming to catch them when they are 2" long ... I was focussed on something the males and females could eat comfortably.
Should work out at about £35 for 200 depending on size.

You are lucky. Trout fry aren't available to the general public here in Iowa.
Unless I wanted to stock a lake and pay a few thousand dollars.

Think I'm just lucky here. Trout fishing is so widespread that the hatcheries will happily sell fry as they are breeding so much viable stock regardless. The farm I was in touch with informed me they already do smaller orders like this for zoos, animal farms, bird sanctuaries, wildlife projects, etc. Depending on the time of year there will be a variety of trout to choose from too.

Good idea Greg, when i get up and running I might see if I can do the same. Got a Fish farm about 1/4 of a mile from me across the field. ;)

A late night visit with a dip net might solve the problem.
Then again it might bring up a whole new set of problems.:D

A trout fry? At whose house? Should I bring some hushpuppies or some drinks?

Did a test today. I bought some flash frozen smelt today. They are not a safe type but with them being whole and the fact that my beasts get supplementation - I'm not worried for this 'one off' report.
Anyway, this was more a chance to test the size of trout fry I will settle on. The smelt ranged between 3.5-4" from nose to tip of tail. They were far too big for the boys so they just received their normal fayre today. The girls however managed to get these down them with a little bit of effort. Even the albino marcianus managed the smallest offering.
As these were a relative challenge for the girls I'll be looking at buying trout fry at the 2" mark.
I shot some video today but I'll be saving it for a new combo vid of several feeding sessions ... so you guys will have to wait :p

Great idea. :-) I think I shall see what options I have around here. I am sure there is a trout farm in kidderminster.
