Hello from Colorado!! Well, where to start; I am not new to keeping snakes. I curently have 0.1 Normal and 1.0 Pastel Ball pythons. I have also kept some venomous when I lived in Texas for a short stint. Grew up catching Garters in the mountains of Colorado and funny enough I have once again found my passion for them. Hoping to look at getting back to the garters in the summer. Feel free to to bug me about whatever!!!

Welcome to the forum! I lived in Greeley briefly. I used to drive to the Rocky Mountains every day when I was there. Absolutely loved living there. My favorite part of the country. Hope to live out there again some day!

Welcome aboard the forum.
Are you thinking about any specific garters in the summer, or planning to see what wild ones can be found in your part of the US?

Thanks all for the great welcome!!! @ Mikem, I used to keep Sistrurus miliarius barbouri (Dusky Pygmy Rattlersnake), Agkistrodon contortrix laticinctus ( Broadbanded Copperhead) and also a Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma (Western Cottonmouth). @ Easterngirl, I LOVE the rocky mountains!!! Wouldnt live anywhere else!!! @ Chris-uk, I am still debating on which is most awesome, of course thats impossible since they all are. I normally dont keep any wild caught, but I guess we shall see when summer hits and I find something awesome... Lol. Thanks again for the warm welcome!!!

cottonmouths are one of my favorite venomous. they're the snake equivalent to a garbage disposal. they'll eat anything :D

Alpine Herp

@Mikem, yes they are garbage disposals. Always have been one on my favorite hots for that reason. He would eat anything!!! So I have figured out how co-dependant I am on the internet as I have not been at work and the internet at my house has been down for alomst a week :0 . Always seems kinda sad when you realize you have a technology addiction... Thanks again everyone for the warm welcome!!!

We have timber rattlers and copperheads in Delaware. It's up for debate on whether or not we have cottonmouths...many people down state claim to have seen them, but many people claim they aren't actually cottonmouths. I have never come across any venomous snakes here in the wild...yet!

We only have three species of Rattlesnake here in Colorado. In 25ish years of living here, I have only ever seen one. I had to move from the trail I was on because there was a father and two kids playing maybe 20 feet away. I would love to see timbers and copperheads in the wild tho. Beautiful snakes!!

Edit: I might have some photos of me and that rattlesnake come to think of it....

Well that would be nice to see. I have no idea where exactly to look for them around here in Delaware...that's the problem. I'm fairly new to the whole herping/snake keeping hobby. So far my herping experience has involved garters and my yard and neighborhood primarily...as we used to have quite a number of garters in my yard alone. This year I started researching other snake species in Delaware...now I would like to go out and see some of the other snakes the state has to offer, but I really have no idea where to begin looking. I wonder if they have a herp society or something here. I'll have to look into it.

42034204My first post and this is my first time as keeper of the snake, or should I say slave to a snake since all he/she has to do is sit there and look pretty and I will wait on em’ hand and foot, literally. Today I stood there and hovered over the tank saying to myself, eat the worm, eat the worm, pleeeeease eat the worm, and TA-DAHHHH, it ate the worm. This made me the happiest person in the world. Okay, maybe that’s a little exaggerated, but just a little. I found this little one on Friday when we had a crazy warm day here in NC and this is the first time it ate. I’ve been trying worms every night, also guppies with no luck, but today a worm was consumed. I’ve also got some fresh tilapia and I’m hoping for the best. Some say feed every day, some say feed 3 times a week, so question one is. How often do I feed. Also I’m thinking the snake is to small for pinkies so until it grows I guess I’ll have to work with the worms and fish. I’ve been reading care sheets since Friday and a real concern at this point is telling the difference between earth worms and red wriggles. Is there a for sure way to tell? Last thing........is this a Wandering Garter?

Ha ha...I did a lot of research...and created a file of all the Delaware snakes. Isn't that Keeled Green Snake gorgeous? I have only come across eastern garters and the water moccasins that people claim we don't have. Oh..no wait...there was a very vicious black racer in my yard going after my dog a few years back...those things are mean! I think I have seen a black ratsnake too.

Looks like T.s.fitchi (Valley Garter Snake) and T.s.parietalis (Red Sided Garter Snake) are the only two sirtalis sub-species to range in CO.
