Planes and snakes ?

So i'm going to visit my brother in Alabama for about ten days and I dont feel like neglecting jade of her food , is there any way to take jade on with me to my seat ? I dont want to put her as cargo because of the chance of getting lost and it being rattled everywhere. So any idea on how to go about this ?

All I know is that I definitely wouldn't put her in cargo. I had a bad experience with my cats when they were kittens taking them on a plane in cargo. They made it out alive, but barely. I don't think an airline would allow a snake on a plane though. I just can't see them going for it. Hysteria and all that. You can't find anyone to watch her or feed her?

You could put a fake lizard in her tank and check her tank into cargo and stick her in your pocket for the plane ride if it's a short ride...just pray she doesn't get loose! Or poop!

Oh no Lol I'm not taking the tank I have a smaller container , not the one I had before I different one that I want and got today I would say about 6 inch all around 4 height. I could travel without her escaping no problem feeding , She eats food from my hand now so it is all about taking her over there.

I just don't know if the airline would let you carry a snake on a plane. Just the idea of a snake gets people weird and all. They probably have laws against it or something. Call them and ask.

My brother is handling the small details of the flight and carry on and I'm not sure since I have to make a stop and transfer to a smaller plane after which I dont think would be a problem on the smaller plane. Hopefully something gets worked out.

Is he going to ask about the snake? The one thing you don't want to do is just show up with the snake and hope they let you on with her. I made that mistake with my cats. First they weren't going to let me on the plane...then they lost my cats! I'm not kidding...when they found them, they were dehydrated and covered in their own feces and burning up...they almost died. I really don't trust airlines with animals. Sorry...but I don't want anything to happen to Jade!

Well, that's four days and he's only going for 10...he probably doesn't want her in the mail for two days. I don't know what I would do in that situation. I've thought of it actually...what if I had to go away for more than a week? I think I know someone who could take care of my snakes for me. Actually, I'm lucky because I think I can probably find a couple of people who would at least come in and feed them for me...but then again...it's all complicated because I have to go through a whole routine for feeding them. Anyway...back to John...

Or he could leave her at his house. 10 days isn't too long, lower the temperatures down to 60 and keep the lamp off and she'll be fine.

When I flew to Omaha I looked into this. Reptiles are not welcome as carry-on even if housed inanescape proof airline approved carry on cage. In retrospect. I wouldtransport tiny snakes in a sewn shut 'mojo bag' padded witherbs and roots and worn on a ribbon aroundmy neck. Airline officials would not be invitedto handle this religious article. (Decorate with designs appropriate to your faith.)

just feed her a little extra the day before or the day of your departure. make sure her water is fresh and temps aren't going to drop too low in your house and jade should be just fine for 10 days. snakes on a plane probably won't happen. shipping her back and forth in such a short amount of time might be too much stress on her anyway.

Okay...I am in agreement with both sides here. On the one hand, I totally agree that Jade should be just fine for 10 days. I used to feed Cee Cee and Seeley every two weeks last year until someone pointed out to me that I should be feeding them more often...but honestly, they did fine, and I doubt they even ate that often in the wild. Seeley often goes a month without eating by choice...and Hermes went two weeks without eating at four months old when I first got him...with no weight loss. Your house is always really warm. If she has a light on in your room so that she isn't completely in the dark, and she has fresh water...she'll be fine. On the other hand, I, as a neurotic snake mom, can understand you being worried about leaving her. I would never advise anyone on how to do something against the rules...cough, cough..but if it were me...I would stick a fake lizard in her little travel tank...check it into cargo...and just stick Jade in my jacket pocket...of course...I haven't been on a plane since they started all the new high tech x-ray crap. I guess she would probably show up on an x-ray machine or something.

lol! don't try to sneak her on! that sounds like something the media would eat up if you got caught! even if it's just a garter snake. she'd definitely be confiscated (not sure if you'd get her back) and you won't be making that flight. also, legally you can only ship reptiles next day air via fedex or with certain airlines.

This trip seems so long now because of this 1 hour wait ! So my itinerary is I leave from an airport in NJ at 3:05pm and make a stop to transfer planes in Charlotte , NC I arrive there around 5 pm but I have to wait one hour for my next planes departure that fact is that flight will only be around half an hour why do I have to wait one hour. I wish I could have jade with me , at least I would of had some company ! and pretty nervous actually haven't been on a plane since 2004 all this security has my brain on edge.

Oh...poor John...you'll be okay. It's not actually long...the flights aren't long at all...you'll be fine. I wish you were closer to me so that I could watch Jade for you. If I had the money, I would take the train up and stick her in my pocket and bring her here...because it's only a 35 minute train ride...but the darn trains are so expensive...and it would take me 6 hours to drive to the city and back. She'll be okay...is there anyone that can just look in on her? You'll be fine too...security is a good thing.

I would have taken jade with me if security wasn't so " high maintenance " in a way of speaking ! But maybe something interesting will happen when I arrive in Charlotte that will keep me entertained.

With people waiting on me and bringing me little coconut drinks...I don't really drink, but one tropical drink would be nice. Well me I was born and raised in the city so when I'm offered the chance to go to places like this I jump at the opportunity , I love it out there so peaceful.

Does anyone know of something to do as a past time at the charlotte douglas airport ? really am not looking forward to that one hour wait , I am very impatient !

Oh...I love airports. I always walk around and eat and go in the shops and stuff...but of course, now..you have to walk in and out of detectors and stuff...so with only an hour wait...make sure you find your gate first, then take a look around and see how many lines you would have to go through to get back to your gate and plan ahead...an hour isn't actually that long...and you don't want to miss your connecting flight!

Yea I know that would be terrible , I just can wait to get to that weather mid 70s , here in New York its been below 40 for a couple weeks now some days even went under 20F very very cold. I need some sunshine in my life. I will be taking some videos from fishing maybe some hunting not so sure if I want to do that also other things like paintball here and there , hopefully I find some snakes to document this is what I want to see the most :) I can wait to see my dog lucky its been about 7 years since I late saw him. This trip has me anxious now but its only Tuesday :(

Wow...you haven't seen your dog in 7 years? That must be so exciting to get to see him. Sounds like you are going to have a lot of fun. Lots of stuff to do. I really want to try paintball. Definitely look for snakes! Hang in there...you'll be leaving before you know it.

Yes I know , its a sad story actually. When I was there 7 years ago me and my brother went to the pet shop because we were going to buy a dog so we saw these two black labradors one female and one male they were brother. When we asked them the price of the one of the dogs she went back out to the manager when she came back with him they said you can have them both free and we will give you a bag of food it was about 5 pounds worth. When we first got the dogs we noticed the female was very unhealthy she was always laying down and barely ate , we took her to the vet they said nothing was wrong so we take her back home. A few days later we came back from Walmart and were going out back to have a barbecue so I was heading out to the back when I came in from the garage and there she was lying on the floor dead in a puddle of blood mine you I was very very young at the time about 11-12 and I discovered her this way. so we buried he in the back yard and covered her scent with bleach I think or maybe vinigar. but the male survived his name is lucky I cant wait to see him again even though I doubt he remembers me.

All this reminds me of the fact that I can go buy worms at Walmart now ! extra special treat for jade , I'm driving back home with my brother so I can actually bring anything back! Jade will be hungry so I just can wait now for sure !

John...that is such a sad story about that dog. Sounds like the vet was an idiot. I love labs. I also had a black lab who had a short life...she died when she was 6 of kidney failure...and my yellow lab, Kaela, died last year...she was 12. I hope to have another lab someday. I'm really glad you get to see Lucky. He will remember you. :).

Good news about some worms for Jade. If you buy a whole bunch...they should last for a while. Just keep them in a cool place.

It's the whole snake thing, John. You have to try to think like a non-snake person for a minute. People get all freaked out about snakes and if someone knew there was a snake on a plane...hysteria would ensue. It would take about 5 minutes before the rumor on the plane turned into "There is a giant venomous snake eating passengers!"...and people started trying to jump out of the plane. Yes, it's ridiculous. But...it's reality unfortunately. There may only be 50 seats...but that is still 49 people that could flip out and cause a plane crash over a little snake.

Well...in my perfect fantasy world, a lot of things would be different. You could just fly yourself to NC and carry Jade on your back...because we would all be able to fly, amongst other things. Heck...in my perfect fantasy world, you could probably just teleport to NC. And yes, everyone would love snakes :).

But Mike is right about the not trying to sneak a snake on a plane...I didn't even think about the whole getting caught thing...since I was mostly kidding. They would probably confiscate the snake. Horrible...grumble grumble.
